Good Saxophone Practice: A Lesson for Beginner Saxophone Students

Good saxophone practice is about getting your brain into the right gear.  If you’re a beginner saxophone student taking Ed’s beginner saxophone lessons at Ed Sax School, it’s really important that you know how to practise effectively and efficiently.

Getting good on the saxophone requires, broadly, two things: great saxophone lessons and a great saxophone practice method.  Today we are talking about the second part of this equation.

So how does Ed practise the saxophone?  Here’s what Ed says about saxophone practice…

The thing most beginner saxophone students get wrong – and I notice this time and time again in our lessons – is that they try and do too much at the same time.  They do the equivalent of trying to run, climb a mountain and lift weights at the same time.  Bringing this back to music and the saxophone, they try and learn how to read music, how to make a great sound on the saxophone and how to finger all the saxophone notes – and some beginner saxophone students decide to throw in a fourth element of trying to learn how to improvise and all of jazz harmony as well.

All these elements are separate studies.  Obviously they will be brought together at some point but you mustn’t try to run before you can walk!  Be clear in your mind about what exactly it is that you are practising when you put some time in – is it how to read music?  Is it how to improve the sound you’re making and to get the saxophone to sound more beautiful and in tune?  Or is it how to dextrously move between the notes and the octaves on the saxophone?

FOCUS your time on one specific thing – the brain is a delicate piece of kit and it must specialise in order to improve.  My saxophone lessons are for beginners to both the sax and to music – the video beginner saxophone lessons cover how to get good at the saxophone and my eBook ‘Learn How To Read Music Today’ teaches you how to read music.

Separate studies!
